L3Harris has received an $876.4 million contract modification for the next engineering and manufacturing development phase of the U.S. Navy’s Next Generation Jammer Low Band (NGJ-LB) programme. The system is designed to disrupt enemy radar and communications systems.
The final terms of the contract modification have not yet been definitized. Through these efforts, the U.S. Department of Defense aims to accelerate the NGJ-LB programme and deliver new capabilities to military personnel more rapidly.
NGJ-LB’s Electronic Jamming Capabilities
The NGJ-LB system is designed to disrupt and degrade enemy radar and communications systems through advanced electronic jamming capabilities and high processing speeds. Its modular and open architecture is intended to simplify maintenance and facilitate the integration of future technological upgrades. NGJ-LB is also expected to support joint and allied operations while providing growth capacity for the integration of future technologies.
L3Harris’s work on the NGJ-LB programme builds on its support for the AN/ALQ-99 Tactical Jamming System, which is used by the U.S. Navy for airborne electronic attack missions. The company plans to continue supporting existing systems while developing next-generation electronic attack capabilities.
Chris Aebli, President of Communication and Spectrum Dominance at L3Harris, stated that the programme enhances the ability to counter threats operating in low-frequency bands. Aebli noted that the system would enable aviators to respond to these threats more safely and from extended ranges.
Utah Senators John Curtis and Mike Lee, along with U.S. Representative Celeste Maloy, highlighted the programme’s contributions to U.S. national defence and Utah’s defence industry. Lee stated that hundreds of Utah residents are working on the NGJ-LB programme in Salt Lake City.
Under the contract, L3Harris will provide the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) with non-recurring tooling and equipment, associated labour, pods for system demonstration testing, cybersecurity enhancements, and product, logistics, test and evaluation, and software support. Testing will continue in line with the Navy’s delivery schedule.
