Poland has launched a major industrial infrastructure move to boost the logistics and sustainment capability of its M1 Abrams main battle tanks. An official contract was signed between Wojskowe Zakłady Lotnicze Nr 1 S.A. (WZL-1), a subsidiary of the Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ), and U.S.-based Honeywell Aerospace to set up an Authorized Engine Service Center in Poland for the AGT1500 gas turbine engines that make up the tanks’ main power package.
Speaking at the signing ceremony held at the WZL-1 facilities in Dęblin, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk highlighted both the military and industrial dimensions of the project. Emphasizing cooperation with the United States, Tusk noted that there are only three such authorized service centers for Abrams tank engine maintenance in the world, and that Poland has now become the third country to possess this capability. The goal is also to play a key role in the development of Abrams tank engine technology in the region.
Regional Maintenance and Overhaul support for AGT1500 Engines
The infrastructure to be set up in Dęblin under the agreement aims to increase the combat readiness of M1 Abrams tanks currently in service with the Polish Army as well as those of allied nations in the region. The new center will offer fully qualified service, including routine maintenance and field repairs as well as full-scale overhauls that reset the engine’s life. With this move, Poland will reduce its reliance on foreign support in the logistics chain of its armored units and gain the ability to ensure operational continuity using its own resources.
PGZ and Government Officials Attend Signing Ceremony

Supporting Poland’s goal of becoming a regional logistics hub, the signing ceremony saw high-level representation from both the government and defense industry bureaucracy. Prime Minister Donald Tusk was joined by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk, and Deputy State Assets Minister Konrad Gołota. On the industry side, PGZ President Adam Leszkiewicz and PGZ Vice President Piotr Zawieja were present, showing their commitment to the process and underlining the importance of bringing Abrams tank engine technical capability to the country.

With this investment, WZL-1 is transferring its aviation experience to the power packages of armored platforms, while the PGZ group is advancing its goal of becoming one of the maintenance, repair, and logistics centers on NATO’s eastern flank. This gives Poland a regional edge in Abrams tank engine maintenance.
