Israel’s Ministry of Defense has taken the first concrete step in a project to extend the range of its F-35 Adir fighter jets. This will allow them to conduct deep strike operations without relying on aerial refueling. The ministry signed a $34 million contract with Cyclone, a subsidiary of Elbit Systems, for the integration of external fuel tanks. These tanks will significantly expand the operational radius of the fifth-generation aircraft. Moreover, the new capability, to be integrated into the Lockheed Martin-built jets, aims to reinforce Israel’s strategic air superiority in the region.
Contract Value exceeds $34 Million
The agreement between Israel’s Ministry of Defense Directorate of Production and Procurement (DPD) and Elbit Systems Cyclone is valued at over $34 million (approximately 100 million NIS). Under the project, Cyclone will build on an existing external fuel tank design previously developed for F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters. That design will then be adapted to the F-35 Adir platform. This will cover both development and integration of the new tanks.

Reduced Dependence on Aerial refueling
The new capability is expected to deliver multiple operational advantages to the Israeli Air Force. The external fuel tanks will increase the aircraft’s combat range and reduce dependence on aerial refueling for long-range missions. Additionally, they will extend loiter time during deep strike operations, all of which will improve operational flexibility.
Part of a Larger Force buildup Strategy
The contract was executed as part of a broader force buildup strategy led by Defense Minister Israel Katz and Director General Major General (Ret.) Amir Baram. The ministry stated that the project is designed to strengthen Israel’s readiness for future security challenges. Additionally, it will help maintain the country’s air and strategic superiority in the region.
