Europe is getting ready to declare its orbital independence with the next-generation VORTEX-S spaceplane—a vehicle capable of autonomous orbital free-flight and two-way logistics support for space stations. Shaped by Dassault Aviation and OHB, this multi-purpose platform goes beyond traditional rocket systems. With its reusable design, it aims to become the European Space Agency’s (ESA) most critical strategic asset in the future.
Dassault and OHB Join Forces in Space
French aviation giant Dassault Aviation and German space technology specialist OHB have joined forces to advance ESA’s space transportation vision. Under the project, Dassault Aviation takes on the role of lead designer and overall integrator. Meanwhile, OHB is responsible for designing the service module—the orbital lifeline and operational heart of the vehicle. The VORTEX-S spaceplane isn’t just a cargo carrier. Instead, it’s being designed as an unmanned platform capable of carrying out autonomous missions. This versatility is seen as a technical milestone. Therefore, it will reduce Europe’s external dependence in both military and civilian orbital operations.

At the core of this partnership is the complementary expertise of the two companies. Éric Trappier, CEO of Dassault Aviation, emphasizes that the project will directly strengthen Europe’s space capabilities. Meanwhile, OHB CEO Marco Fuchs points to the shared vision of two high-tech giants with family-company cultures. Dassault Aviation will manage a broad technical scope—from the aircraft’s airframe architecture to its aerodynamic design. In addition, OHB focuses on the design and integration of the service module, which determines the vehicle’s operational capabilities in orbit.
This core team, which aims to give Europe orbital independence, is also in talks with other major European aerospace players to expand the team. The goal is meeting complex requirements like reusability and autonomous flight. The initiative is especially important for strengthening Europe’s competitive edge in the reusable space vehicle market. If VORTEX-S gets ESA’s approval, it will open the door to a new era in the continent’s orbital access strategy.
