Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s “spiritual legacy,” TCG SAVARONA, is once again sailing the seas with the power of national engineering. STM’s indigenously developed STMDENGİZ WECDIS system has been integrated into the vessel. As Türkiye’s first locally produced WECDIS product with Wheelmark certification, the system has equipped Savarona with safe and modern navigation capabilities through digital chart support. With this technology, STM also aims to expand its export achievements on national platforms.
Highlighting the project’s symbolic importance, STM General Manager Özgür Güleryüz stated: “Contributing to Savarona, the legacy of the founder of our Republic, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, is not merely an engineering project for us, but also a historical responsibility and a source of pride.” Güleryüz expressed pride in combining nationally developed systems, usually integrated into modern warships, with a historic symbol this time.
Türkiye’s First Wheelmark-Certified WECDIS Product
Developed for military naval platforms, STMDENGİZ WECDIS is the first WECDIS product from Türkiye to receive Wheelmark approval — the globally recognized certification under the Marine Equipment Directive (MED).
The system is designed for use on both surface and underwater military platforms, supports next-generation chart infrastructure, and meets all functional military requirements. Operable from the bridge or the Combat Information Center, the system automatically displays the vessel’s route digitally and enhances navigational safety with additional military layers.
A New Era in Navigational Efficiency
Developed entirely with domestic software, STMDENGİZ WECDIS integrates multiple data sources to enhance situational awareness at sea.
It shortens the voyage planning process, automatically updates chart corrections, and reduces personnel workload. With its user-friendly interface, it provides route planning, editing, and safety control functions.
STM continues to work on upgrading the system to be compatible with S-100-based charts in the near future.
A Strategic Component of National Projects
Thanks to its Additional Military Layer (AML) support, STMDENGİZ WECDIS allows for the integration of mine or wreck detection data into the system, ensuring safer and more controlled navigation for naval vessels.
Its civilian version, STMDENGİZ ECDIS, became Türkiye’s first ECDIS product to receive MED certification in 2020.
The WECDIS system is currently used on Türkiye’s İstif-class frigates, National Fast Attack Craft, and New Type Mine Hunting Vessel (Y-MAG) projects, as well as on STM’s exported warships.
