The U.S. Navy is opening a new chapter in modern warfare doctrine by bringing a massive 35,000-ton nuclear-powered warship back to the seas. Dubbed the Trump class, these new nuclear-powered battleships are designed to combine laser weapons and hypersonic missile capabilities. All are powered by an onboard nuclear reactor. Moreover, the platform aims to achieve logistical independence and unlimited range.
Nuclear Propulsion and Weapon System Data
According to the official shipbuilding plan published in May 2026, the Trump-class battleships (BBGN) are specifically designed to provide uninterrupted power for directed energy weapons and electromagnetic railguns. Both of these weapon systems require high energy output. The platforms are expected to be approximately 270 meters in length. They are projected to be equipped with 128 Vertical Launch System (VLS) cells. Additionally, the use of nuclear power eliminates the need for refueling stops at ports. As a result, the ships offer sustained operational presence in high-intensity conflict zones.

Revision Decision on Aircraft Carrier Designs
The official document also notes that a comprehensive review process has been initiated for existing aircraft carrier architectures. In response to threats posed by next-generation long-range missiles and unmanned systems, future aircraft carriers are planned to be built in a more modular structure. This means they can readily accommodate technological upgrades. As part of this effort, restructuring the current hull designs and flight deck configurations is under consideration.
Procurement and Production Schedule
According to the Navy’s 30-year projection, a total of 15 Trump-class nuclear battleships are expected to be procured between 2028 and 2055. The first ship is expected to cost approximately $17.5 billion to build. The platforms are also intended to support the Navy’s surface fleet in terms of technical capability.
