The Type 45-class destroyer HMS Dragon of the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy departed from Portsmouth Harbour to strengthen defense activities in the Eastern Mediterranean. The United Kingdom Ministry of Defence made the decision to deploy the vessel as an additional element to the existing defensive presence. This deployment came at a time when threats to British interests in the region persist.
As part of the operation, HMS Dragon is accompanied by drone-countering Wildcat helicopters armed with Martlet missiles. In addition, a Merlin Mk2 helicopter that deployed from RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall to Cyprus provides support. These assets will operate in an integrated manner with radar networks, air defense systems, and F-35 fighter jets already stationed in the region.
Sea Viper System and Operational Capabilities
HMS Dragon, which forms the United Kingdom’s first line of defense against aerial threats, provides a high-capacity protective shield thanks to its advanced Sea Viper missile system. The system stands out with its ability to fire up to eight missiles per second. Moreover, it can track and destroy up to 16 different targets simultaneously. The ship is capable of detecting and neutralizing aircraft, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
During sea trials conducted last year, HMS Dragon successfully intercepted supersonic missiles. According to Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Steve Moorhouse, the destroyer will maintain the United Kingdom’s strategic presence in the region. It will do so with a high level of operational readiness.
