US President Donald Trump has ordered the withdrawal of 9,500 US troops stationed in Germany.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported that the United States would withdraw troops, and Trump's National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien recently signed a circular in this direction. It has long been known that Trump has put pressure on Germany to increase defence spending.
A government official said some of the troops would be sent to Poland and other allied countries, while others would return to the United States.
Former US Ambassador to Berlin Richard Grenell last year threatened that some of the US troops would be withdrawn if Berlin did not increase its defence budget.
A US official told The Guardian that there are currently 34,500 American troops in Germany, and that number could fall to 25,000 on Trump's final order.
