Saab is taking Swedish air defence into the future with the Giraffe AMB surveillance radar and the LSS Lv command‑and‑control system. Sweden has made a billion‑krona move to protect its borders and brigade‑level combat units against modern aerial threats, sitting down with Saab to procure the Giraffe AMB radar and LSS Lv systems. The Saab Giraffe AMB sits at the heart of Sweden’s ground‑based air defence strategy. The deal, worth 1.2 billion Swedish kronor (SEK), was signed with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV). Moreover, this agreement will radically modernise the country’s ground‑based air defence (GBAD) capabilities.
The procurement, which continues Saab’s previous deliveries to the Swedish Armed Forces, is scheduled for completion between 2029 and 2030. In addition, the next‑generation sensor and command‑and‑control solutions will directly help detect and neutralise even the most complex and asymmetric threats in the airspace from very long ranges. Thus, Saab’s Giraffe AMB technology aims to enhance the Swedish army’s defensive capability.

Seamless protection through integrated radar and command‑and‑control infrastructure
Designed to preserve units’ freedom of manoeuvre during field operations, the short‑ to medium‑range Giraffe AMB forms the backbone of the tactical battlefield with its powerful radar architecture. At the same time, when combined with the LSS Lv system – which handles integrated command‑and‑control functions – the airspace is continuously scanned and all threat elements are classified within seconds. In addition, an instant tactical situation assessment can be carried out without gaps. Thanks to the Giraffe AMB integration, the decision‑support mechanism speeds up against dynamic, rapidly manoeuvring target scenarios, cutting reaction times to a minimum. Any air gaps that might appear when ground units relocate or move are completely prevented. As a result, uninterrupted air superiority support is achieved.
Following the agreement, Carl‑Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s Surveillance business area, highlighted the technical and strategic importance, stating that they are very proud to contribute to strengthening the air defence capability of the Swedish Army’s brigades. He also stressed that the developed system will significantly improve their ability to conduct air defence operations, adding that this order is an important recognition of the success of the Giraffe AMB together with GBAD command‑and‑control solutions.
At a time when air defence umbrellas are being restructured across Europe, Sweden has passed another threshold by deepening its partnership with Saab, the strongest player in its domestic defence industry.
