Airbus has delivered the 53rd A400M to the German Air Force and announced that it will evolve the A400M platform into a “mothership” concept capable of carrying 50 unmanned aerial vehicles or 12 cruise missiles. These technical upgrades, which will increase the maximum payload capacity to 40 tons, are transforming the aircraft’s strategic transport identity into a multi-dimensional operational hub.
Airbus Defence and Space has completed the delivery of the 53rd aircraft to be added to the inventory of the German Air Force (Luftwaffe). The technical data shared alongside the delivery focuses on four key modernization areas aimed at enhancing the aircraft’s operational flexibility.

Increasing Capacity and Mission Diversity
Within the scope of development efforts carried out in cooperation between Airbus and user air forces, the following improvements are targeted for the strategic and tactical capabilities of the A400M system:
- Payload Increase: Logistics efficiency will be improved by raising the current capacity of 37 tons to 40 tons.
- “Mothership” Concept: The platform will be enabled to air-drop up to 50 medium-class UAVs or 12 cruise missiles of Taurus size.
- Satellite-Based Landing System: Satellite-assisted precision landing integration will be implemented to enhance crew mission focus.
- Plug-and-Play Firefighting Kit: With a “roll-on/roll-off” kit, the platform can be converted into a firefighting aircraft capable of dropping 20 tons of water or fire retardant.

These technological upgrades aim to strengthen the A400M’s technical infrastructure, enabling it to respond to the evolving needs of the modern battlefield.
