New technical details about the advanced technology research project called “Nantianmen,” carried out by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), were recently shared with the public through official presentations. According to information that entered the defense industry agenda about a week ago, the centerpiece of the project is a massive air-space platform named “Luanniao,” with a maximum takeoff weight of 120,000 tons. Measuring 242 meters in length and featuring a wingspan of 684 meters, this concept aims to carry modern aircraft carrier capabilities into the upper layers of the atmosphere and to the edge of space.
Nantianmen Project and the Technical Specifications of the Luanniao Platform
The Luanniao platform, detailed within the scope of the Nantianmen Project, is designed to be equipped with high-energy weapon systems and electromagnetic propulsion technologies. According to technical data shared by Chosun Daily, the platform is designed to carry up to 88 low-observable (stealth) unmanned combat aerial vehicles of the “Xuannü” type. These unmanned systems are expected to possess engine technologies capable of operating in extra-atmospheric conditions and the ability to carry hypersonic munitions. In addition, it is planned to provide protection against enemy missile systems through laser weapons and electromagnetic shield technologies integrated into the platform’s defensive architecture.
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and an Integrated Defense Ecosystem
The operational components of the introduced ecosystem are complemented by auxiliary platforms such as “Baidi” (White Emperor) and “Zihuo.” These vehicles are being developed to take off from the Luanniao mothership to perform reconnaissance, surveillance, and direct strike missions. It is stated that these systems, which have vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capability, will be able to operate in both manned and fully autonomous modes. According to the shared strategic timeline, China aims to bring these technologies under the Nantianmen Project to an operational level by 2040 and to establish a permanent defense and logistics line at the edge of space.
