The 168th Air Refueling Wing of the Alaska Air National Guard has increased its operational strength in the Arctic region with the addition of four KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft to its inventory.
The U.S. Air Force expanded its aerial refueling assets in Alaska to support the growing presence of fifth-generation fighter jets in the region. With the delivery of the new KC-135 Stratotankers, the total tanker capacity of the 168th Wing, based at Eielson Air Force Base, has reached 12 aircraft.
Continuous Support for F-22 and F-35A Operations
Alaska already hosts one of the highest concentrations of fifth-generation fighter aircraft in the world, including F-22 Raptors stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and F-35A Lightning II squadrons at Eielson Air Force Base. The addition of new tankers will directly enhance “power projection” capabilities in Arctic and North Pacific airspace by extending the patrol duration of these aircraft.
Increase in Personnel and Technical Capacity
This deployment, carried out under the Total Force Integration (TFI) initiative, was not limited to aircraft alone. To ensure operational continuity, approximately 200 additional military personnel have also been assigned to the region.
Aircraft Type: KC-135 Stratotanker
Mission: Aerial Refueling and Logistical Support
Deployment Location: Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska
Capacity Change: Increased from 8 to 12 aircraft
Strategic Objectives and Overcoming Delays
Deliveries that were originally planned for fiscal year 2023 but delayed due to technical reasons have now been completed as of 2026. This expansion, seen as a deterrent against the air activities of Russia and China in the region, aims to fill a logistical gap in the United States’ Arctic strategy.
