A critical milestone has been reached in the new-generation U212NFS (Near Future Submarine) program to be built for the Italian Navy. The keel-laying ceremony for the first block of the program’s first submarine was held at Fincantieri’s Muggiano shipyard. Furthermore, the U212NFS project continues to secure a significant position within the defense sector.

The ceremony, held on February 27, 2026, marked a concrete step in the program. The program includes the construction of a total of four submarines along with a comprehensive logistics support package. In addition, the project is managed by the Europe-based OCCAR (Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation). In this context, the importance of the U212NFS program is noteworthy in terms of international defense cooperation.

According to the plan, the first submarine of the series, U212NFS, is scheduled to enter service with the Italian Navy in 2029. The submarines to be developed under the U212NFS designation will enhance the navy’s operational capabilities.

From U212A to U212NFS: Technological Evolution

The new-generation U212NFS class represents a significant technological leap compared to the U212A models currently in service. At the core of this technological evolution are the advanced systems introduced with the U212NFS. In addition, the maturation of the design and the increased capacity for integrating onboard systems directly enhance the platform’s operational capability.

The submarine’s key technical features and innovations include:

  • Lithium-Ion Propulsion System: Longer underwater endurance enabled by battery technology developed by Italian industry.
  • Advanced Combat Management System: Full integration with next-generation sensors and weapon systems.
  • Enhanced Stealth: Reduced acoustic signature through an optimized hull design.
  • Cyber Resilience: Reinforced network infrastructure against modern digital threats.

All these innovations define the technological vision of the U212NFS project.

The Role of the Italian Defense Industry and the Muggiano Shipyard

The U212NFS program is not only a military procurement project but also part of Italy’s vision to preserve its national industrial know-how. Moreover, the Italian supply chain, led by Fincantieri, is strengthening its technological edge through the localization of submarine components. With the U212NFS project, the capacity of the Italian defense industry is set to further expand.

Having built more than 100 submarines over more than a century, the Muggiano shipyard continues, through this project, to uphold its status as a historic symbol of Italy’s strategic underwater platform production. In particular, the U212NFS program carries this legacy into the future.
