In a statement on social media using strong language, Guetté argued that NATO has ceased to be a collective defense organization and has instead become a military structure completely controlled by the United States and serving its interests.
Guetté, saying that France’s position within the alliance needs to be questioned, listed the following allegations that she claims show the U.S. has violated international law:
- Interventions at the level of the head of state in Venezuela and attempted abductions,
- Full support for military operations in Palestine and allegations of genocide,
- Threatening Greenland with armed annexation,
- Bombardments carried out in blatant disregard for international law
First Step: Leaving the Integrated Command Structure
Emphasizing that France needs to reassert its sovereignty, the Vice President of the Parliament stated that the bill she submitted contains a strategic roadmap. Guetté proposed that, as a first step toward a “planned exit from NATO,” France should withdraw from the alliance’s integrated command structure.
France had previously left NATO’s military wing in 1966 under then-President Charles de Gaulle, but returned to the structure in 2009 during Nicolas Sarkozy’s presidency. Guetté’s move has reignited debates about strategic autonomy in France.
