RTX subsidiary Collins Aerospace has signed a $438 million strategic contract with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to modernize the National Airspace System.
Modernization Move in the FAA Radar Systems Sustainment Program
Signed under the FAA’s Radar Systems Sustainment Program, the contract aims to increase the reliability and safety of air traffic control operations. As part of the project, Collins Aerospace will deliver next-generation cooperative and non-cooperative radar systems that will provide critical data to air traffic controllers. The next-generation radars will replace multiple legacy systems, simplifying operations through a single, interoperable, cost-effective, and adaptable architecture.
Operational Efficiency and the Infrastructure of the Future
Commenting on the matter, Nate Boelkins, President of Avionics at Collins Aerospace, said:
“Having served the FAA as a trusted supplier for more than 70 years, Collins is ready to rapidly transform legacy technology into a modern and interoperable solution. These systems will seamlessly integrate with existing infrastructure to enhance safety and efficiency, while also reducing long-term costs and ensuring the National Airspace is prepared for the future.”
High-Precision Tracking with Condor Mk3 and ASR-XM
The systems to be delivered under the contract consist of the Condor Mk3 and ASR-XM models, which stand out for their technical capabilities. The Condor Mk3, a cooperative surveillance radar, communicates directly with aircraft transponders to transmit data, while the ASR-XM operates as a non-cooperative radar system that detects aircraft using reflected signals. Capable of much more precise aircraft tracking, especially at low altitudes, these systems meet FAA surveillance requirements and have completed the necessary certification processes. Integrated into more than 550 RTX radar systems currently operating in the national airspace, these new technologies represent the most critical link in the modernization process.
