The Israeli Ministry of Defense and Rafael officially delivered the Iron Beam defense system, based on high-power laser technology, to the inventory of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in a formal ceremony.
A new era is beginning in Israel’s air defense capability. The Israeli Ministry of Defense’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D) and prime contractor Rafael Advanced Defense Systems transferred the Iron Beam laser defense system, whose development process has been completed, to the IDF this morning.
A New Component in the Multi-Layered Defense Line
The Iron Beam laser defense system demonstrated high effectiveness in tests conducted against rockets, mortar shells, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Within the Israeli Air Force (IAF), the system will operate in an integrated manner with Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow systems, completing the country’s multi-layered air defense architecture.
Technical Superiority and Low-Cost Interception
Equipped with an advanced laser source and a precision electro-optical targeting system, Iron Beam can neutralize a wide range of targets at long range. The system’s most significant advantage is its low cost per interception, providing operational efficiency.
Technology and Cooperation
While Rafael serves as the prime contractor of the project, defense industry giants such as Elbit Systems, SCD, and Shafir Systems also contributed to the development of the system.
Rafael Chairman of the Board Dr. Yuval Steinitz stated during the delivery ceremony: “Today marks the beginning of the high-energy laser defense era. This success was made possible thanks to Rafael’s unique adaptive optics technology and represents a global technological breakthrough.”
Rafael CEO Yoav Tourgeman emphasized that they have turned a visionary concept into reality, underlining that the system offers a unique capability in a rapidly changing security environment.
