FN Herstal has unveiled a new TACTICAL variant for its FN MAG General Purpose Machine Gun platform – a weapon already in service with 90 countries – along with a Long Rail Conversion Kit that allows existing units to be upgraded to this configuration. The new variant retains the original military standards of the 7.62×51mm NATO‑chambered weapon while adding dual‑optic capability and ergonomic enhancements.
This latest evolution brings rail integration technology – initially applied to sniper and assault rifles – to the general purpose machine gun category. The system allows gunners to use co‑aligned day, night, or thermal imaging systems simultaneously.
Modular Receiver Architecture and Technical Features
The 11‑inch monolithic top rail on the FN MAG TACTICAL gives the user roughly 14 inches of operational space. This Picatinny‑type rail system enables the use of co‑aligned optics without blocking the weapon’s original mechanical iron sights. The rail structure is supported by a dual‑sided, symmetrical feed cover latch based on the FN SIDE‑CLICK system, making it easier to open the cover from either side.
The feed cover also features the FN AUTO‑LOCK retention system, which holds the cover open during loading, unloading, or malfunction clearance for added convenience. To prevent damage to optics, the cover mechanism has a 62‑degree opening limit, and in that position it can support an optical load of up to 2.5 kilograms.
Other updates to the receiver include a longer, movable carrying handle that provides balanced transport and remains compatible with barrel changes even when full‑length co‑aligned optics are fitted. At the rear, a tactical stock offers 3‑position length‑of‑pull adjustment and 6‑position cheek rest adjustment. Equipped with an integrated folding shoulder support and a soft buttpad, this system requires no modification to the original operating mechanism.

Full Compatibility with M240 and L7A2 Configurations
These modern upgrades are not limited to the original FN MAG; they are fully compatible with all configurations of the weapon, including the U.S. designation M240 and the British designation L7A2. Available with new‑build weapons, the system can also be ordered as a separate conversion kit and installed by local maintenance personnel in just a few minutes using basic tools. Additionally, the tactical stock is offered as a standalone upgrade package.
Three Patent Applications Filed
“The new FN MAG TACTICAL was developed for military organizations that want to combine proven reliability with modern ergonomics and co‑aligned optic capability,” said Christophe Soleil, Vice President of Small Arms at FN Herstal. The company fully supports and certifies the new tactical variant, he noted. “Supported by three pending patents, these enhancements deliver combat‑proven, game‑changing technology to our global customers. As the original designer and manufacturer, we have evolved the FN MAG system to meet modern battlefield requirements – backed by more than 135 years of innovation and industrial excellence.”
