Four B-1B Lancer strategic bombers belonging to the U.S. Air Force have landed at RAF Fairford in the United Kingdom. The B-1B Lancer deployment comes following U.S. notifications that it intends to intensify air operations targeting Iran.

Operational Details

A total of four B-1B Lancers arrived at the Gloucestershire base: one on Friday evening and three on Saturday morning. The U.K. Ministry of Defence (MoD) stated that the B-1B Lancer aircraft have been assigned to “specific defensive operations.” These operations are aimed at countering Iran’s missile activities in the region.

Chief of the Defence Staff, Sir Richard Knighton, announced that missions conducted by the U.S. from Fairford are expected to begin within the next few days. Additionally, the B-1B Lancer will play a significant role in these upcoming missions.

Base Access and Regional Support

Prime Minister Keir Starmer approved the use of U.K. territory for defensive operations against Iran’s missile facilities. This decision allows U.S. forces to operate from RAF Fairford and the Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean. Furthermore, the B-1B Lancer presence at RAF Fairford is central to these operations.

The United Kingdom has also reinforced its regional military presence with the following assets:

  • HMS Dragon (Type 45) destroyer deployed to the area.
  • A Merlin helicopter assigned to provide additional airborne surveillance and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities.
  • HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier placed on “high readiness” for potential deployment.

Background

The deployment decision followed U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s statement that attacks on Iran would “increase significantly.” Tensions in the region had escalated last week due to air operations by the U.S. and Israel against Iran. Moreover, there were retaliatory strikes by Iran.
