The Italian Government and Naval Command have initiated an operational process to strengthen Italy’s strategic presence in the Eastern Mediterranean. Within the framework of coordination among Italy, Spain, France, and the Netherlands, the frigate Federico Martinengo (F 596)—which will undertake the defense mission off the coast of Cyprus—departed from the naval base in Taranto on 7 March 2026. On that date, the frigate began sailing toward the island. As part of the operation, at least 160 naval personnel are expected to be deployed to the region. In addition, they will assume critical defense duties.

Operational Choice and Current Status

According to Italy’s Il Sole 24 Ore, although there was speculation over the name of the ship participating in Operation Safe Mediterranean until the last moment, the final decision favored the Martinengo. This ship is a General Purpose variant of the FREMM class. The ship’s current operational experience played a key role in its selection. Last year, the Martinengo demonstrated its capabilities by countering threats to commercial shipping during the EU mission Eunavfor Aspides in the Red Sea. Therefore, its technical proficiency was proven.

Technical Capabilities of the FREMM Program

Built at Fincantieri’s Riva Trigoso shipyard and delivered to the navy on April 24, 2018, the Federico Martinengo represents one of the most capable units in the Italian-French FREMM program. As the seventh ship of the ten-frigate series planned for Italy, it stands out with a full-load displacement of 6,900 tons and a length of 144 meters. This makes it a significant platform in the Eastern Mediterranean. Its advanced radar and sonar systems provide several advantages. These include the precise detection of drones or rockets within approximately 200 kilometers. Detected threats can be neutralized with Aster air-defense missiles. These missiles have an effective radius of 100 kilometers.

Beyond air defense, the frigate offers layered strike capabilities with anti-ship missiles, advanced guns, and torpedoes optimized for anti-submarine warfare. It can also carry SH90 or EH101 helicopters. Therefore, it enables naval-managed air operations.
