India has decided to purchase five new S-400 Sudarshan air defense missile system squadrons from Russia. In fact, India S-400 Sudarshan acquisition has become a key element in the country’s defense planning. According to a report by ANI News, this move came after the system’s success during Operation Sindoor and its reported effectiveness against Pakistan. In addition, the Indian Air Force plans to deploy these additional squadrons on both the eastern and western fronts. This will strengthen its air defense capability.
The Indian Ministry of Defence will soon evaluate for approval the proposal submitted by the Air Force for the procurement of five additional India S-400 Sudarshan squadrons.
Current Procurement Process and Indigenous Projects
The process continues under the initial contract signed between India and Russia in 2018 for the procurement of five S-400 squadrons. Within the scope of this agreement, three of the total five India S-400 Sudarshan squadrons ordered have already been delivered to India and commissioned into operational service. Meanwhile, the remaining two squadrons are expected to complete their production and delivery processes. They will be inducted into the inventory in the near future.
On the other hand, in addition to these systems procured from Russia, India is also continuing work on projects led by its Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). These projects aim to meet its long-range air defense requirements. Moreover, the India S-400 Sudarshan systems are seen as complementary to indigenous solutions.
