South Korea has taken an important step to accelerate efforts to develop next-generation aircraft engines and strengthen technological independence in its defense industry. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on Friday that, together with relevant government agencies, it had established a special council aimed at coordinating plans to develop advanced propulsion systems for the fighter jets of the future and facilitating inter-ministerial cooperation.
Strategic Goal: Independence in Engine Technology
The aircraft engine development sector is considered one of the most strategic and sensitive areas of the defense industry due to its structure that requires high investment, long development periods, and strict regulatory oversight. Currently, only a limited number of countries—such as the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Russia—possess fully indigenous aircraft engine technology.
South Korean officials emphasize the main benefits that domestic development will bring:
- Cost Reduction: Domestic production will significantly reduce the high maintenance costs currently paid to foreign suppliers.
- Competitive Power: The international export competitiveness of Korean-made fighter jets will increase.
The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) had announced a preliminary roadmap for the program in January, outlining priorities such as workforce training and the establishment of essential infrastructure.
Role of the Council and Ministry Remarks
The newly established council will aim to prevent budget overlaps between different agencies and ensure coordination through regular discussions on major R&D issues.
Lee Sun-hye, a senior official from the Ministry of Trade, stated that technological independence and supply chain stability are essential for the success of the program. Choi Seung-wook of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport emphasized the critical importance of providing proper certification for both domestic use and overseas sales.
This step is seen as a strong indication of South Korea’s commitment to its vision of becoming a global player in the aviation and defense industry.
