A mysterious vessel under construction at the Huangpu shipyard in Guangzhou, China, has drawn attention in international defense circles. According to satellite imagery, the newly built ship — covered by tarps and featuring a three-hull (trimaran) design — appears to combine characteristics of both surface warships and submarines. It is believed to be designed for unmanned and high-speed operations.
Trimaran Design and Potential Mission Purposes
According to Naval News, the approximately 65-meter-long ship is being built at the Huangpu shipyard, which is typically known for producing frigates and corvettes. Satellite analyses reveal a long and narrow hull supported by trimaran structures at the stern, with much of the vessel concealed under covers.
There are two main theories about the vessel’s intended role:
• Semi-Submersible Arsenal Ship: Some defense sources suggest the vessel could be a semi-submersible arsenal ship capable of carrying a large number of cruise missiles while operating with low radar visibility. Its dark-colored paint is viewed as a design choice supporting this function.
• Drone Carrier and Special Mission Platform: Another theory proposes that the vessel serves as a drone carrier platform or a tactical transport craft. The box-like structure at the bow could act as a hangar for unmanned aerial or surface drones. Additionally, given that the Huangpu shipyard has previously built semi-submersible transport vessels, it is suggested that this new ship may be intended for carrying special forces, underwater vehicles, or unmanned systems.
