Indonesia has announced that it is in the advanced phase of negotiations with the Brazilian government regarding the purchase of used Tupi (Type 209/1400) submarines.
The process of sale of Tupi-class diesel electric submarines, which served the Brazilian Navy from the end of the 1980s, has begun.

Two Tupi classes are being considered for the Indonesian Navy. Indonesia, which has two Cakra-class and three Nagapasa-class platforms in its inventory, has signed a contract to buy an additional three Nagapasa-class submarines from the Republic of Korea.
Indonesia has a contract with Aselsan for the Nagapasas that includes the purchase of acoustic torpedo counter-measure disruptor and traps. Aselsan announced that it was making the first deliveries in 2020.
The Indonesian government has also received offers from Russia for new and second-hand Kilo-class submarines.
