Georgian Defence Minister Iraqi Garibashvili spoke about the new defence plan during a Joint Committee session in Parliament.
In addition to the Javelin anti-tank missile system in the inventory of the Georgian Armed Forces, the Secretary of Defence said they plan to purchase new Javelins from the United States in 2021.
Describing the United States as a “strategic partner”, Garibashvili said they would continue to actively cooperate with the United States to strengthen Georgia’s combat readiness and regional defence capabilities.
While the speech in Parliament, stated that artillery units would be equipped with modern fire control systems; next year, NATO-standard weapons systems such as M-4 rifles and modern machine guns will be operationally used.
According to the minister, next year it is planned to purchase operational and tactical unmanned reconnaissance and combat drones. Manoeuvring and artillery units will be equipped with modern reconnaissance aircraft.
On November 17, 2017, the U.S. State Department expected the sale of FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile systems to Georgia. The agreement included the delivery of 410 Javelin missiles, 72 launchers, spare parts and 70 simulators to the Georgian Armed Forces.
Georgia received its first batch in 2018.
