Israel Begins Construction of Patrol Ship for an African Country

Israel Shipyards announced the start of construction of an OPV-45 (offshore patrol vessel) for Africa.

The firm announced the ship order in July (2020), but it was not disclosed who the country that bought it was. The platforms will be built to “protect against the growing threat of piracy in the region,” the firm said. Upon this sharing, the unnamed country was thought to be located in the Gulf of Guinea.

Africa Intelligence said the order was made by The Republic of Cote D’ivoire.

The platforms have 300 tons of displacement and are 45.7 meters long. Powered by two MAN 6V 175D-MM diesel engines, the OPV-45s are 8.6 meters wide. Platforms for Africa will be equipped with Israeli-made day/night surveillance system and stabilized weapons.

Israel Shipyards said the platforms will be delivered to the user country within the next two years.
