First S-80 Class Submarine Launched

Spanish shipyard Navantia is unveiling Isaac Peral S-81, the first S-80-class submarine it built for the navy.

Considered one of the largest non-nuclear submarines, the platform is about 80 meters long and has 3,000 tons of displacement.

Equipped with an “Air-independent propulsion system” that uses liquid oxygen and ethanol, the submarine does not need hydrogen tanks to store hydrogen separately. Equipped with three main weapons, the platform will use the DM2A4 heavy torpedo, the UGM-84 Sub-Harpoon anti-ship missile and the SAES mine. The submarine will also have UGM-109 Tomahawk missiles.

The S-81 is expected to begin naval tests in 2022 and is expected to be delivered to the navy in early 2023.
