The F-35 joint program office approved a plan to install automatic ground collision avoidance software on the aircraft five years ahead of its original schedule.
According to a statement published on 30 January, the office plans to field the new technology by 2019. Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System (Auto-GCAS) initiates a manoeuvre that will reduce the risk of collision if the risk is imminent. F-35s are currently equipped with an earlier version of the software that requires pilots to respond warnings manually.
