US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman visited Ankara. Speaking to CNNTÜRK after the high-level talks, Sherman briefed on the sanctions against Turkey for the S-400 air defence missile.
CNNTÜRK correspondent: “The United States has lifted German sanctions against North Stream 2 … Turkey saw this as a double standard. Can sanctioned countries back down? Do you think these sanctions are effective?”
“North Stream and the S-400 are very different,” Sherman said.
“Taking the S-400s is causing problems for the NATO alliance. We offered an alternative; they know exactly what to do. I hope we can find common ground. This technical detail is not an issue, nor is it political. Turkey is aware of the situation and knows the steps it needs to take. We also discussed how to take these steps, it will be Turkey’s decision,” she said.
