Tawazun to Be Responsible for Acquisitions in UAE’s Defence Segment

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), issued two resolutions appointing the Tawazun Economic Council (Tawazun) to manage the force’s procurement and contracts.

Tawazun will be responsible for the acquisition and acquisition management for the UAE Armed Forces and Abu Dhabi Police, as well as the assurance of projects and contracts, quality. With the new decision, implementation of the Tawazun Economic Programme was also mandated.

One of the council’s advisors is Ahmet Lütfi VaroÄŸlu, former head of the International Cooperation Department of the Presidency of Defence Industries. VaroÄŸlu, who knows the structure of the Defence Industry very well, is considered to have made a great contribution to the council.

At the IDEX 2021 defence fair in Abu Dhabi, it was announced that Tawazun had signed a defence cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia. An agreement was also reached with MBDA at the event. In this context, work will be carried out to develop the SmartGlider guided weapons family. Under the agreement, a team of joint engineers from both sides will begin developing the missile system. The majority of engineers will be from Tawazun and development will take place at MBDA’s first regional Missile Engineering Centre established in the UAE.

Tawazun and Otokar have a joint venture company, Al Jasoor. The company produces Rabdan armoured vehicles for the UAE Armed Forces.
