Sweden Signs Contract with BAE Systems

BAE Systems has signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to manufacture 20 additional CV90 mortars. The approximately $30 million contract was awarded to HB Utveckling AB, a BAE Systems Swedish joint venture combining BAE Systems’ Hägglunds and Bofors manufacturing capabilities. Production will take place at BAE Systems Hägglunds in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden.

Tommy Gustafsson-Rask, Managing Director of BAE Systems Hägglunds, said: “This new contract change for additional mortars enables soldiers to take advantage of this critical capability in the near future. We look forward to continuing to support the Swedish Army’s efforts to modernize and increase its combat power. “

The first contract for 40 CV90 Mjölner systems was signed in 2016. The deliveries of the systems started in 2019 and were completed in 2020. In February 2022, FMV signed the Swedish Army’s first follow-up contract to upgrade 40 systems already in service alongside 20 additional systems to bring them all to the same standard by integrating the Swedish Army’s new C4I LSS Mark system.

When contract modification deliveries are completed in 2025, the Swedish Army fleet will have 80 CV90 mortars. Known as the Granatkastarpansarbandvagn 90, the vehicles provide critical indirect firepower capability in mechanized brigades.

Around 1,300 CV90s in various variants are in service in Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Recently, both Slovakia and the Czech Republic chose the CV90 to replace their legacy infantry fighting vehicle fleets.
