March 9, 2021SHORAD Receives Export License
The China-based Global Times newspaper said it had been approved for an export license for the HQ-17AE Short-Range Air Defence (SHORAD) system.
Developed under the main contractor of China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), the system will be used for air defence against precision guided munitions.
China was unable to produce the Tor, a short-range air defence system produced by Russia, under licence, so it went on to copy the system under the name HQ-17. It is known that there are at least three versions of this family of products.
The air defence system can be used against more challenging targets such as fixed-wing aircraft, armed helicopters, drones, tactical air-to-surface missiles, anti-radiation air-to-ground missiles, as well as supersonic cruise missiles.
