Indonesia has reached an agreement with India to acquire the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system as part of its strategy to strengthen naval defense capabilities.
Rico Ricardo Sirait, spokesperson for the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, announced on Monday that a contract had been signed with India for the supply of the missile system. According to a report by Reuters, Sirait stated that this acquisition is part of the broader goal of modernizing military equipment. In particular, it aims to enhance defense capabilities in the maritime sector.
No official statement has been made regarding the total value of the contract. However, data shared by BrahMos in 2023 indicated that negotiations with the Jakarta administration were ongoing. The amount discussed was between 200 million and 350 million USD.
Regional Exports and Partnership
Developed through a joint initiative of the Indian and Russian governments, the BrahMos system achieved its second international success with Indonesia. This followed a sale to the Philippines in 2022. Neither BrahMos nor the Indian Ministry of Defense has yet issued an official confirmation or additional statement regarding the agreement.
