iMUGS Performs Autonomous Tasks

At a demonstration led by Safran and Nexter in Versailles, France, the Integrated Modular Unmanned Ground System (iMUGS) project Consortium demonstrated the use of autonomous unmanned ground systems for various defense missions, such as intelligence gathering, casualty evacuation, and last-mile resupply. The partners met at Nexter Robotics’ facilities, which were made available during the weeks of integration and validation prior to the show.

The demonstration held in France was the fifth of a total of six demonstrations held as part of the iMUGS project. Previous shows have taken place in Estonia, Latvia, Finland and Belgium. The last show is scheduled to take place in Germany in December.

During the demonstration, three Milrem Robotics THeMIS UGVs equipped with payloads from consortium members and collaboration partners performed various autonomous missions to demonstrate the capability of the iMUGS system. Among these tasks are; autonomous mission planning from the operator’s point of view, object detection and recognition and ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance), autonomous resupply and casualty evacuation, and finally cyber threat response.

The missions performed by the French Armed Forces proved how manned troops can carry out missions more safely and effectively using unmanned systems.

Kuldar Väärsi, CEO of Milrem Robotics, the leader of the iMUGS Consortium said: “Unmanned systems increase the distance from the enemy and, thanks to various sensors and effectors, allow soldiers to gather more information about their operation area, in greater quantities and with much more precision than humans can. It changes the game for the armed forces, as they ensure that they are allocated to important missions.”
