Italy Increases Air Force’s Electronic Warfare Power

The US State Department has permitted the sale of two Gulfstream G550 aircraft to Italy. It said the agreement would include the delivery as well as maintenance of the planes. The total cost of the contract is thought to be worth about US$500 million.

The G550 civilian aircraft produced by Gulfstream were converted into useful for electronic warfare and support operations by making the necessary modifications.

The G550s will be sent to Italy with four Multifunctional Information Distribution Systems – Common Tactical Radio System (MIDS JTRS), three Embedded/GPS/INS (EGI) and four RIO Communication Intelligence Systems.

The Italian Air Force is operationally using the Aerial Early Warning (CAEW) variant of two existing G550 aircraft in its inventory.
