March 2, 2021F-35B Begins Sea Trials
The F-35 Joint Program Office announced that two F-35B Lightning II aircraft have begun naval tests on the Italian aircraft carrier ITS Cavour (CVH 550).
The pilots and aircraft join a test team of approximately 180 personnel from the NAS Pax River-based F-35 Integrated Test Force (ITF) embarked for up to four weeks of sea trials.
With the first two F-35B, also known as the BL-1 and BL-2, Italy will be the third country to deploy fifth-generation platforms on board the aircraft carrier.
Cavour has a 234-meter main runway and 24 aircraft can be deployed. The ship’s integration into F-35B was completed in 2020 with a 16-month process.
