Egypt’s Second FREMM Begins Sea Trials

The second Bergamini-class FREMM (Fregata Europea Multi-Missione) frigate, to be delivered to Egypt by Fincantieri Shipyard, began sea testing in mid-February.

The Naval News news site reported that the platform was launched in the middle of this month, based on photos taken in La Spezia, where the Fincantieri shipyard (Muggiano) is located. The frigate was first displayed with the code Egypt would use.

The delivery date of the ship, called BERNEES (FFG 1003), has not yet been announced. It is thought that delivery could take place in the coming weeks.

As part of the deal, worth around €1.2 billion, the first frigate Al Galala (FFG 1002) left La Spezia on December 25th and reached Alexandria on December 30th.

The FREMM programme, an Italian-French Defence industry collaboration project, is shaped on a common basis against the needs of countries. The ship, which has a full load displacement of 6,500, is 144 meters long.
