British Prime Minister Announces New Naval Ships

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said in a statement on Downing Street on Tuesday that they are strengthening Britain’s security on the grounds that Russian threats are increasing. In this context, the UK has signed a £4.2 billion contract with BAE Systems to manufacture five City Class Type 26 frigates in Glasgow for the Royal Navy.

The Type 26 frigate, one of the most advanced warships in the world, is also designed for anti-submarine warfare and high-intensity air defense. However, the ship can also be quickly adapted for the role of carrying high volumes of humanitarian support and supplying medical facilities.

“The United Kingdom and its allies are taking steps to strengthen their security in the face of increasing Russian threats. Russia’s actions put us all at risk. We are using the breadth and depth of the United Kingdom’s expertise to protect ourselves and our allies, while providing the Ukrainian people the support they need. This includes the construction of a new generation of British warships.” Sunak said in a statement.

The statement said the spending is the next phase of the program where three ships are currently under construction. The first of three Type 26 ships under construction in Glasgow, HMS Glasgow is expected to land later this year and be delivered to the Royal Navy in the mid-2020’s. In addition, all eight frigates are expected to be completed by the mid-2030’s.

The statement came while Sunak was in Bali, Indonesia, for the G-20 Leaders’ Summit. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who did not attend the meeting, sent the Foreign Affairs Minister instead. But Downing Street said Sunak and his allies would “notice the Russian leader’s disregard for human rights” and stress that Russia’s role in the international system will never normalize as the war in Ukraine continues.
