November 21, 2022NATO General Secretary: Coming Months Will Be Difficult for Ukraine
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that Ukraine is facing difficult months and that Russia’s military capacity should not be underestimated.
Stoltenberg praised the courage of Ukrainian forces after Russia’s withdrawal from Kherson and called for continued international support for Kiev. “The coming months will be difficult. Putin’s aim is to leave Ukraine in the cold and dark this winter,” Stoltenberg said, and held a press conference in Lahey after meeting with the Netherlands foreign affairs and defence ministers. “We must not make the mistake of underestimating Russia,” said Stoltenberg, emphasizing that Moscow forces have significant capabilities and a large number of soldiers. “Russia has shown that it is willing to bear significant losses,” he added. Stoltenberg said that after Moscow’s withdrawal from Kherson, “the Ukrainian armed forces showed incredible courage, but also demonstrated our continued support for Ukraine.”
“You’ve all seen the horrific scenes in liberated areas and indiscriminate attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure” Stoltenberg told reporters. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on Zelensky’s visit to Kherson on Monday but said: “This region is part of the Russian Federation.”
On the other hand, Stoltenberg met with Netherlands Foreign Affairs Minister Wopke Hoekstra and Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren to discuss the Netherlands’ contribution to NATO and the war in Ukraine. Ollongren continued his words: “We all see that with the liberation of Kherson the Ukrainian strategy is working, but winter is coming, and we must not turn around. If Russia stops fighting tomorrow, there will be no more war. If Ukraine stops fighting, there will be no Ukraine.”
