When the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) moved to protect its interests in the Mediterranean, it experienced various open and secret embargoes, including the ones from NATO allies. The best-known example of this is the arms embargo imposed by the USA in response to the Cyprus Peace Operation in 1974. The TAF and Defence Industry Directorate took the crucial lessons from these experiences and accepted it as the basic policy that it could protect its interests with national weapons.
