The USAF shot down an F-16 (QF-16), which was converted into a target drone aircraft using the infrared search and tracking feature of the Legion Pod system mounted on the F-15C aircraft, with the AIM-120 AMRAAM missile. The missile has an active radar seeker and uses it to steer towards the target under normal conditions.
As a result of transmitting data from AMRAAM Legion Pod with the datalink of the aircraft’s APG-63v3 radar, the missile successfully met with its target.
The aim and most important feature of the test was to show that targets can be hit by communication of various sensors and combining data from sensors without being dependent on radar technology at mid-range.
