The U.S. State Department announced the approval of the possible sale of an additional six P-8I maritime patrol aircraft to India. Six aircraft, a joint tactical radio system (MIDS-JTRS 5), AN/AAR-54 missile warning sensor, an inertial navigation system and related equipment will be delivered to India as part of a $2.42 billion military sale.
In January 2009, the Indian Navy purchased eight P-8I aircraft from Boeing through Direct Commercial Sales, according to the ministry. New Delhi signed contracts for an additional four aircraft in July 2016.
The P-8 Poseidon’s version for India (P-8I) has a Telephonics-made AN/APS-143 Ocean Eye radar that allows it to scan in a 360-degree area at the rear.
