The United Kingdom Ministry of Defence has announced that the platforms to be procured under the New Medium Helicopter (NMH) program are planned to enter service in January 2031. In addition, Defence Minister Luke Pollard shared details regarding the delivery process following the contract signed for the Leonardo AW149 helicopter.
According to a report in the UK Defence Journal, UK Minister for the Armed Forces Luke Pollard confirmed the current timeline of the New Medium Helicopter (NMH) program in a written response to a parliamentary question submitted by Conservative MP James Cartlidge. According to the finalized plan following the £1 billion contract signed with Leonardo, the first Leonardo AW149 helicopter under the program is targeted to be delivered in the summer of 2030. The platform’s operational service entry has been scheduled for January 2031. In addition, according to the timeline, delivery of the final helicopter and the completion of the equipment procurement contract are expected in autumn 2033.
Domestic Production and Employment Target at Yeovil Facilitie
Under the terms of the contract, Leonardo will produce a total of 23 Leonardo AW149 helicopters at its facilities in Yeovil, Somerset, England. The UK government stated that the project will secure thousands of skilled jobs in the region. It also emphasized that the Yeovil site will be developed into a global hub for military helicopter production and exports.
It was noted that the financial structure of the program has remained unchanged since the negotiation phase in February 2024. Furthermore, approximately one-third of the total contract value is expected to be spent over the next three fiscal years.
Operational Role of the AW149 Platform
The newly procured Leonardo AW149 helicopters will replace existing helicopter types that are approaching the end of their service lives. In addition, the aim is to consolidate multiple rotary-wing missions into a single platform.
The helicopter’s operational capabilities include battlefield personnel and cargo transport, disaster response, humanitarian assistance operations, and various defense missions. Furthermore, equipped with a modern design and advanced avionics systems, the platform will be integrated into the inventory with the objective of simplifying logistics processes and increasing operational flexibility.
