The UK Ministry of Defence and the Royal Air Force (RAF) have announced a £650 million investment to modernize Typhoon fighter jets with the latest radar systems.
The UK Ministry of Defence has prepared a new funding package aimed at enhancing the operational capability of the air force and supporting the defense industry. This £650 million investment is intended not only to strengthen the technological infrastructure of the aircraft but also to directly contribute to the national economy.
£453 Million Strategic Contract

The main phase of the modernization process is represented by a £453 million contract signed with BAE Systems, Leonardo UK, and Parker Aerospace. Under this agreement, Typhoon fighter jets within the Royal Air Force will receive a comprehensive radar upgrade. The technical improvements aim to provide RAF pilots with the following capabilities:
- Faster target detection and tracking
- Increased operational accuracy
- Enhanced protection systems
The remaining £205 million of the investment package is completed by an engineering support contract signed with QinetiQ. This separate five-year agreement will cover the integration of the aircraft’s weapons systems, airworthiness testing, and technical maintenance processes, ensuring the operational continuity of the fleet.
Employment and Regional Investment Data
According to data shared by the Ministry of Defence, the economic outputs of the £650 million investment package are as follows:
- 1,500 Jobs Secured: The project will safeguard a skilled workforce of 1,500 across the UK.
- 330 Companies: 330 companies within the defense industry ecosystem will benefit from this investment.
- Strategic Regions: Local workforces in three main areas—Edinburgh, Lancashire, and Luton—will be supported as part of the modernization efforts.
Typhoon Modernization Program
The investment program aims to extend the technological lifespan of the RAF’s Typhoon fleet and equip the aircraft in service with advanced radar systems. Using British workers and local engineering capacity, the project seeks to optimize the UK’s defense capabilities against current threats.
