Lockheed Martin (LM) has announced on 16 March that it has completed the design, development and demonstration of a 60 kW-class beam combined fiber laser for the U.S. Army. The demonstration was carried out earlier this month, during which the laser produced a single beam of 58 kW. A senior official from the LM Laser and Sensor Systems stated that the laser beam was close to the physical limits for focusing energy toward a single, small spot. The laser system can be deployed on tactical vehicles for defensive applications on land, at sea and in the air.
