US Allows Poland to Buy Ammunition

The US State Department has approved Poland’s purchase of $10 billion worth of advanced rockets and rocket launchers. This is the last order the US has received from its Eastern European allies after the war between Russia and Ukraine.

According to DefenseNews, the purchase includes 18 M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers and 468 launcher-loader module kits. In addition, the announcement made yesterday includes 45 M57 Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) and guided multiple launch rocket and warhead variants.

In addition, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announcement included the following: “This proposed sale would support US foreign policy goals and national security goals by enhancing the security of a NATO Ally, a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe. While advancing Poland’s objectives to update its military capabilities, it will further increase interoperability with the United States and other allies. Poland plans to use these defence products and services to modernize its armed forces and expand its capacity to strengthen homeland defence and deter regional threats.”

Poland has been trying to buy HIMARS since before the Russia-Ukraine war, as Poland is transitioning to modern Western equipment throughout the military. In this context, some important purchases, including 288 K239 Chunmoo multiple rocket launchers and K-2 tanks, were shared between the USA and South Korea.

Poland is the last Baltic country to sign a deal with the US for HIMARS, after Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
