The UK has launched a five-year work programme for the modernisation of the existing M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS).
A total of 44 launch vehicles will be refurbished under the agreement with the US Department of Defence. Modernization will ensure that MLRS systems remain in inventory for another 30 years. According to the statements, the equipment will remain in service until 2050.
The system will also use the US precision guided missile (PrSM), which has a range of 499 km and is expected to enter service from 2024.
