The United States calculated the cost to the budget of the nearly 20-year-old operation in Afghanistan. About $193 billion has been spent on the operation in Afghanistan since 2001, according to the Pentagon.
The United States had signed an agreement with the Taliban to end its military presence in Afghanistan by May 1, but Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said no decision had yet been made on the troops in Afghanistan.
U.S. Defense Secretary General Lloyd Austin said reducing the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan would be considered due to the decrease in the level of violence in the country. Austin also said they would consult with “NATO partners” on the decision.
There are a total of 9,600 NATO troops in Afghanistan, including 2,500 US troops.
Afghanistan was also on the agenda of the NATO Defence Ministers’ meeting in February, but the two-day event failed to reach a decision on NATO’s next step.
