Japan has taken delivery of its eighth Sōryū-class diesel-electric submarine from Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) on 13 March. Designated as Sekiryu, the submarine was launched in November 2015. 84-m long platform is powered by two 8000 BG Kawasaki 12V 25 S diesel engines and Kawasaki Kockums V4-275R Stirling air-independent propulsion (AIP) system. Equipped with six 533 m bow tubes, Sōryū-class submarines are capable of firing Type 80 and Type 89 torpedoes as well as UGM-84 Sub Harpoon anti-ship missiles.
