Saab has signed a strategic framework agreement with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the high-performance and compact 3D radar Giraffe 1X. The systems to be delivered under the first order, valued at approximately SEK 650 million, will modernize the Swedish Armed Forces’ capability to detect threats in the air and on the sea surface. This first batch, which stands out in particular with its Compact Radar Module (CRM) configuration, can be rapidly integrated into many different units, from pickup-type vehicles to armored platforms, thanks to its lightweight structure.
Saab Surveillance Business Area Head Carl-Johan Bergholm emphasized that this agreement is a critical step toward strengthening Sweden’s national security capabilities, stating that the system offers a flexible solution against both current and future threats.
Technological Infrastructure Suitable for the Future Battlefield
Giraffe 1X is a software-based 3D AESA radar equipped with special algorithms to detect “Low, Slow and Small” (LSS) class UAVs, which are among the most challenging targets of the modern battlefield. With a total weight of under 150 kilograms and a search range of up to 75 kilometers, the system is capable of automatically tracking more than 600 targets simultaneously. The radar is actively used not only in air defense missions, but also in sea surface surveillance, protection of critical facilities, and counter-UAS (C-UAS) operations. It can remain continuously up to date against next-generation threats through software updates without the need for hardware modifications. In addition, by detecting rocket, artillery, and mortar munitions (C-RAM) and providing early warning, Giraffe 1X will increase the operational flexibility of the Swedish military while raising situational awareness on the tactical field to the highest level.
