S-400 Hits Hypersonic Targets

Russia used its S-400 Triumf (NATO reporting name: SA-21 Growler) against a hypersonic missile during the drills in Eastern Siberia.

“During the live-fire exercise, over a dozen targets simulated by Armavir target missiles and Favorit smart hypersonic [target] missiles were destroyed. All the targets were hit,” the press office said in a statement.

S-400 Triumf is the latest long-and medium-range surface-to-air missile system that went into service in 2007. It is designed to destroy aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, and can also be used against ground installations. The S-400 can engage targets at a distance of up to 400 km and at the altitude of up to 30 km under intensive enemy fire and jamming.

C4Defence investigated the smart hypersonic target missile Favorit. Favorit is based on 5V55 missiles that are in use at S-300 air defence missiles. The TVM guidance system and warhead are removed. The telemetry and remote control system are placed. Thanks to its rocket engine, Favorit-RM may reach 7000Km/h for a short period. It can mimic the new generation of hypersonic threats. Thanks to its telemetry capacity, it can provide all data until impact.
